Today on Discovery Friday we have a very special artist to share. I talked to ÆON RINGS, an ambitious east coast residing band. A HUGE force in shaping the current scene in NYC. They are involved in some of the largest parties (Night.Wav) and have a very impressive tour coming up this year. Without further adieu.
1.What Started you in electronic music?
The electro scene of the early 00’s honestly. Always loved the 80’s and those are my favorite bands, but truthfully I never thought of doing it myself until I started going to clubs and REALLY grasping what dance music culture was. I always knew it existed of course. But I was a child in the 80’s and my folks were country bumpkins, so no, the reality of dance music culture didn’t sink in until I experienced it for myself, and that was around 2001.
not necessarily synth related I’d be lying if I told you it wasn’t Metallica. They were my end all be all. Truly obsessed. Them, PantherA, Megadeth, Type O Negative and London After Midnight. Later after really delving into goth music, that’s what opened the door to the keyboard oriented and electronic side of things. Fischerspooner, the Faint, Client, Miss Kittin, then the futurepop which was big back then like Apop, VNV, and then EBM Nitzer Ebb. Fell in love and hard.
3. Favorite hardware/Vst’s?
Started with a Roland XV-5080 that is like a 90’s rave dream rack mount module, got an MS-2000B but actually sold it. Been primarily using VST’s for a while now but I’m tryin to save for some good hardware again. VST’s include Sylenth, Rob Papens Predator, and been really diggin on Serum as well.
4. How does it feel to be involved in some of the largest synthwave projects?
Oh I wouldn’t call my involvement large in any way. I’m grateful that anyone cares about what I do at all. I’m nobody. Really. I try to have some curation and do justice to my hero’s the way they did for me. I will always fall short. But I try my hardest. I don’t believe in releasing an album a year if it doesn’t feel right. Never release anything just for a releases sake. Take time, make effort. Put your blood into it. You can release 3 albums with 5 “filler” songs that you in your head know aren’t top notch. And people can sniff those out. And who knows, as I say this, there are probably plenty who think everything I’ve ever done are “fillers”.. just be true to you and take your time. I dunno, I just try to be methodical and true to myself and if someone likes it and wants to play with me or have me remix their material, I consider it a privilege and an honor. To all who have helped and may be friends in my future, I thank you sincerely.
5. Where would you like the scene to go?
I want the scene to not confine themselves into 1mm X 1mm pigeon hole like “if it doesn’t sounds JUST. LIKE. -THIS-. Then it doesn’t count!” That’s utter nonsense . No artist grows or is credible if they’re putting out the same damn song/album 4/5 times in a row. And I refuse to follow in knickleback or Godsmacks footsteps… you can talk shit about Madonna all day I suppose, but no one can sit here and say she didn’t reinvent herself 20 times and STILL slayed. If you’re not growing, you’re dyin. Expand and transcend without fear or self doubt. Keep it synth if you want. If you wanna add guitar, to for it. If your last album sounded like an arcade and you decided you really like something on the other spectrum now.. fuckin do you! Put YOUR spin on it. We don’t need 80 of the same band. That’s boring.
6. Any Closing statements
I wish all the best to my brothers and sisters in the synth game. Keep workin hard, believe in yourself, do what you love. Just don’t be afraid if you have more influences that don’t sound identical to one another. Thank you to anyone who ever gave me an opportunity and believed in me. And thank you for your patience with my upcoming material to be released. I hope you all enjoy.
Much love to all of you. Cheers!
