Entering the world of synthwave can be confusing, where do you start? Where can I find resources? Where do I go? Etc. In my travels I’ve found one person so enthusiastic about bettering the scene that it has truly humbled the person I am today. Meet the Timeslave Recordings Artist, “The G”.
“The G is a synthwave producer based in Singapore by law of Los Angeles. His music explores the tropes of 1980s music and pop culture from a modern point of view. His music is designed to evoke daydreams, endless summer nights and the romance of space exploration and the open road.”
His sound is instantly classic. Vintage, crunchy, mixed ~just right~ to invoke some great retro vibes.
Run down of his gear
Hardware: Roland JX-3P, Ju-06, Korg Minilogue.
Software: Diva, Repro, OP-X, U-No-Lx and a shit ton of other VSTs. He works in both Logic and Reason.
Cosmopolis was made entirely in Reason 8 and 9.
I also work as a mastering engineer, primarily but not exclusively for other synthwave artists. My clients include Vampire Step-Dad, Computronic and 24:7, among others.
To me, mastering is like solving a puzzle. First you identify the artist’s vision, preferably without preconditioning. Then you identify the problems–the things inhibiting that vision from becoming all it can be. Finally, you add “shine” to all the stuff that works, to bring it out, while working with the client to solve the problems.
I’m blessed to have wonderful clients, but I also just love doing this job.
He has been featured prominently on NRW, Echosynthetic and is the John Fryer Producer of the Year!
